CCTV: 6 criteria for choosing the right system

A poorly planned CCTV system often produces unusable footage exactly when you need it. Here are the six criteria we review with every client before an installation.

1. Analog or IP?

IP cameras deliver better images, run over the IT network and are easy to expand. They are now the default choice for businesses.

2. The right resolution for each area

An entrance where you need to recognize faces has different needs from a car park. We pick the resolution and lens zone by zone.

3. Night vision

Check the stated infrared range and test it on site: badly placed outdoor lighting can blind a camera.

4. Video storage

How many days must footage be kept? The number of cameras, the resolution and the retention period determine the recorder’s disk size. Leave some headroom.

5. Remote access

Viewing cameras from a smartphone is very convenient, as long as access is secured: strong passwords, regular updates and a separate network for the cameras.

6. Legal compliance

Filming employees or public spaces is regulated by law. Inform people with clear signage and check which authorizations are required.
